These analog weighing machines are the first weighing machines that were invented and have the oldest mechanism to check someone’s weight. Let’s have a look step by step from the parts of the machine to the actual working:
- The machine has a spring inside it. The spring is small and has to be adjusted to zero with the assistance of a knob. This helps in actuating the machine and hence the machine tells the exact and accurate reading.
- There is not only a single spring. Instead, there are two springs which work simultaneously to show the reading. The first spring is adjusted to zero and it helps the second spring to show the reading. A mechanical assembly is present inside the machine which helps this process to take place.
- Now, another thing to know is that there are bars under the surface of the machine. The surface we are referring to is the plate on which a person stands to check his or her weight. When the person stands on that plate, he or she exerts a pressure om the bars placed below the plate.
- When these bars feel the pressure or force that is exerted on them, they tend to go down and thus they initiate another round of mechanism
- The bars are joined to another spring. This particular spring is connected to the dial. The dial is that thing on which the readings are printed.
- Now, when the bars are pressed, they press the spring. The spring, in turn, presses the dial and the dial starts rotating.
- The rotating motion of the dial is directly proportional to the force exerted on the bars and the force exerted is nothing but your weight. So more the weight, more is the rotatory motion of the dial.
So this was the basic working or mechanism of the oldest form of weighing machine. Analog weighing machines are still the most reliable machines and due to the lower price, they are most sought after by households and medical centres like hospitals, doctor’s clinics, etc.
